Oh dear…

I quite like Chris Evans and his breakfast show on the radio. Sometimes, however… Today Mr Evans seemed to step over a few lines. He’s done it, but in the context of the BBC, and particularly Radio 2, they’ve been run-of-the-mill fare. Today? Well…

Basically, Mr Evans quoted The Mail over a story concerning Beyonce and Victoria Beckham’s “demands” to stop calling women ‘bossy’, and then he made a joke of it (for context listen here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03xdd4z (until 18th March 2014)). Mr Evan’s said, “Okay” then added; “Rather goes against what they’re trying to get over… doesn’t it?” No, Chris. That’s actually the point. As soon as a woman voices an opinion about something, she’s called “bossy”. If a guy stood up and said “stop calling people bossy!”, would he be called bossy himself? There is a legitimate call for this term to be curtailed, certainly in connection with women. It’s a term used to shout women’s views down. For a better exposition of the argument see: http://www.upworthy.com, and look for “Calling girls This Word May Seem Harmless…”, or there’s http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/mar/12/ban-bossy-sheryl-sandberg-beyonce-campaign from the Guardian. Just dismissing this as flippantly as your joke, Mr Evans, adds to the pressure women’s (political) views are against. And I thought you were above that…

Then Mr Evans mentioned the untimely death of RMT Union Leader, Bob Crow, and played The Strawbs’ Part of the Union as a “tribute” (I believe). Although the TUC took this on as an unofficial anthem, one of the band’s members claimed the lyrics were written with sarcastic intent. The record is in fact anti-union! Probably… (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Part_of_the_Union). If you wanted to play a tribute, Mr Evans, then Billy Bragg recorded two suitable tracks: a cover of Joe Hill’s There is Power in a Union (Talking With The Taxman About Poetry), or Which Side Are You On? Just a suggestion… (Billy Bragg did get an airing for his Milkman song!)

Thank you for posting this – words like this can shape or ruin someone’s world. Words, and labels, are important. Belittling someone detracts from the message someone has to share. These words are important.
